EQC - Great Opportunity - 24 Month Contract

This role is a fixed term of 24 months

For more than 60 years the Earthquake Commission (EQC) has been managing and administering funds to address the claims associated with natural disasters in NZ.

This is a new role within the EQC Strategy, Policy & Legal team. The team plays a central role in supporting the Chief Executive and EQC as a whole, to deliver key internal and external commitments.

As the Senior Legal Adviser, you will carry responsibility for providing legal advice to all areas of the organisation and where appropriate liaising with our external legal advisors. This role also encompasses legal research, assisting with documentation reviews, and development of operational policies and commercial contract reviews.

As such, in addition the specific legal experience, you will need to offer the interpersonal, communication, and relationship skills to be effective in dynamic, collaborative and values based organisation, committed to delivering the highest quality services to those who require our services.

An ideal candidate will bring:

  •        Law degree achieved at a high standard
  •        Hold a New Zealand practising certificate
  •         Some familiarity with the provisions of the Crown Entities Act 2004, Earthquake Commission Act 1993, Employment Relations Act 2000, and the underlying policy and practical applications of the Acts
  •        Strong public sector experience, preferably in Government or Crown entities (minimum 5 years)
  •        Experience in the giving of legislative drafting instructions is desirable but not essential
  •        Effective communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with persons at various levels within and outside of EQC         The capacity to offer timely, practical, and quality legal advice to a range of persons
  •        Experience in the drafting of contracts and giving of legal opinions.
  •        Understanding of issues management, and the need to provide timely advice to media inquiries.
